Animation of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 Plane Crash

AuroraHazel asked:

This three-dimensional animated accident reconstruction shows the final pitch-over and initial portion of the dive for Alaska Airlines Flight 261, which crashed off of Point Hueneme, CA on January 31, 2000. The reconstruction exhibits information selected from the Flight Data Recorder, excerpts from the Cockpit Voice Recorder transcript, recorded radar data and aircraft performance data. This reconstruction does not depict the weather or visibility conditions at the time of the accident.

The animation shows a three-dimensional model of the airplane and its motion. Selected comments from the Cockpit Voice Recorder transcript are superimposed as text at the time they occurred. The time of day (based on the FAA’s Air Traffic Control radar data) and aircraft altitude in feet are depicted as text.

The animation begins with the crew discussing possible mechanical damage to the longitudinal control system and a decision to land at Los Angeles International Airport. The aircraft pitched nose down shortly after the crew redeployed flaps and slats. The animation ends with the crew’s declaration of “MAYDAY”.

As long as there are mostly minorities on the flight - I would gladly die in a crash. It would benefit society, and I would be a hero of the Soviet Union.

and i am going to pray that everyone that shares your thoughts will crash and burn someday alltogether

#11 Alfrunk on 10.18.08 at 6:29 pm

I have started a prayer group - to pray solemnly, and fervently, that there weren’t too many white people on board that fateful flight.

neilyyayo you idiot! It’s an NTSB report on the alaskan airlines, NOT A VIDEO GAME!

Sorry to bring it back up.

But, of course, that was an MD-83, which is part of the MD-80 series.

For one, the engines in a Boeing 737 series are located on the wings while, on an MD-80 series, the engines are mounted on the fuselage behind the wings.

In addition, the 737 does not have the elevator on top of the vertical stabilizer like it does on the MD-80 series.

#15 Watcher3223 on 10.29.08 at 2:07 pm

Basically, what happened was that the jackscrew that controlled the elevator located on top of the vertical stabilizer had failed due to improper maintenance; the jackscrew which manipulated this control surface was not lubricated when it should have been.

But, the fact that McDonnell-Douglas did not design a dual jackscrew for redundancy was cited as a factor in the investigation, if memory serves me.

However, the MD-80 series is a safe aircraft so long as all required service is performed.

I really doubt that anyone would confuse a Boeing 737 for a McDonnel DOuglas Boeing MD83 expecially on a new report, But whatever I have been know to be wrong before

#17 limitlessaviator on 11.03.08 at 4:19 am

Wow. I hate the news… I watched the news report and they said is was a 737. Way to have false info on the news. I think the NTSB would know. Sorry about that!

Please log on to the NTSB’s site and search for the report on flight 261, and presentation of this incident. You will see that this video animation is from the actual NTSB presentation.

You are incorrect. The aircraft was indeed an MD-83. This simulation video comes from the actual NTSB report!

#21 Phopchas on 11.10.08 at 5:59 pm

flt 261 was an MD-80 Aircraft, because I remember that I wouldn’t fly on one for months after that crash… also, they checked that model due to the specific stabilizers on the tail.

#22 limitlessaviator on 11.13.08 at 6:02 pm

Wrong kind of aircraft. The one that crashed was a 737-400, not a MD-80 or similar like in the video.

#23 rosun82 on 11.16.08 at 11:13 am

It is definitely massive murder

#24 neilyyayo on 11.18.08 at 3:38 am
